The Nissan Frontier is a prominent series of pickup trucks, introduced in 1997 as a successor to the Navara D21. The model's evolution spans three generations internationally and a distinct 2022 version for North America. The Frontier D22, produced from 1997, known globally under various names like Datsun and Terrano, came in numerous variants with engines ranging from 2.0L to 3.3L and different transmission options. The Frontier D40, introduced at the North American International Auto Show in 2004, employed Nissan's F-Alpha platform and featured a fully boxed ladder frame, offering a variety of I4 and V6 engines and five transmission options. The third generation, the Frontier D23, launched in 2014 as the NP300 Navara, offered petrol and diesel engines (2.3L and 2.5L I4) with a 7-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission. Notably, it did not replace the D40, as per Nissan North America. In 2018, Frontier embraced Nissan Intelligent Mobility technology, providing features like an Around View Monitor and a blind-spot monitoring system. The model got a facelift in November 2020. Despite distinct iterations for different markets, the Nissan Frontier remains a sturdy and versatile pickup truck option globally.

Nissan Frontier, a well-known pickup truck designed for hauling heavy items over long distances, demands thorough understanding of common wear and tear to ensure its longevity. Primary issues often involve the engine, where problems such as overheating and reduced performance are frequently reported. Collapsed radiator or cooling hoses and broken intake manifold gaskets can lead to coolant leaks and engine overheating, potentially damaging parts like the fuel tank, engine control module, throttle cable, drive belt, rod bearing, and oil filter. If your Frontier exhibits increased fuel consumption, strange noises, or an illuminated Check Engine Light, promptly inspect the aforementioned parts. Another significant concern is the suspension system, which may not entirely incapacitate the vehicle, but can significantly deteriorate the driving experience. Symptoms include uneven tire wear causing the vehicle to tilt, annoying rattling or squeaking noises, sluggish handling response, and excessive vibration. The sway bar bushing, leaf spring bushing, and wheel bearing are common culprits. Beyond these major issues, maintaining overall vehicle health involves ensuring the smooth operation of every system. Extra attention should be paid to the Frontier valve body in the transmission and the parking brake cable in the braking system. Furthermore, routine maintenance is essential for parts like the seat belt, which ensures occupant safety, the headlight that illuminates the road ahead, and the wiper arm that helps clear debris from the windscreen.

Nissan Frontier Parts Questions & Answers

A: Inspect fuel lines and check fuel tank. Set parking brake and have assistant turn ignition switch to On. Listen for fuel pump. Remove fuel line from filter and install T-fitting. Connect fuel pressure gauge and compare pressure with key On, engine Off value. Start engine and compare pressure with engine running value. Disconnect vacuum hose from fuel pressure regulator and monitor pressure for five minutes. Relieve fuel pressure and remove gauge.
  • Q: How to remove and Reinstall the Engine Cooling Fan and Clutch Assembly on Nissan Frontier?
A: Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and rock the fan back and forth by hand to check for excessive bearing play. With the engine cold (and not running), turn the fan blades by hand. Visually inspect for substantial fluid leakage from the clutch assembly. With the engine completely warmed up, turn off the ignition switch and disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Turn the fan by hand. Loosen the fan/water pump pulley nuts several turns. Remove any drivebelts which would interfere with the removal of the radiator fan drivebelt, then remove the radiator fan drivebelt. Detach the lower half of the fan shroud. Remove the fan/water pump pulley nuts and pull the fan/clutch assembly out from the bottom. Carefully inspect the fan blades for damage and defects. At this point, the fan may be unbolted from the clutch, if necessary. Be sure to re-install the fan blade with the "F" mark facing the front of the engine. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the fan and clutch mounting nuts evenly and securely.
  • Q: How to detach, adjust, and reattach the accelerator cable and cruise control cable in a Nissan Frontier?
A: Detach accelerator and cruise control cables from throttle lever, loosen locknut and adjusting nut, separate cable from bracket, pull cable end from pedal arm, disconnect clips, remove cable through firewall. Reverse for installation. Adjust accelerator cable by lifting to remove slack, turn adjusting nut until throttle lever moves, back off 1-1/2 to 2 turns, tighten locknut.
