Nissan Maxima Relay Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How should relays be diagnosed and tested on Nissan Maxima?
A: Newer models from and after 2004 are equipped with what is known as the Intelligent Power Distribution Module Engine Room (IPDMIER); it is considered a Fuse and relay center and is comprised of fuses, relays and another module that takes care of information processing for other electrical parts. The relays in the concern vehicle are controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM) as well as the Controller Area Network (CAN) which cannot be tested or replaced. With reference to Figure 3, the control of high/low beam selection of Headlights, parking lights, rear lights, fog lights, the rear window defogger relay system, air conditioning compressor control and cooling fans, windshield wipers and the Horn control relays lies with the IPDMIER and BCM. DIAGNOSTICS of the IPDMIER system should be done in a dealer service department or any other qualified auto repair shop. Some electrical part that employs relay is fuel injection system, horns, starter motor and fogs; relays are devices which switch a low current control circuit to a high current power circuit. If a relay is bad, the part it is related to will not function well. A majority of relays are placed in the region of the vehicle's emotion compartment and interior fues/relay box while some special relays exist in other parts of the car. If there is a question about a specific relay, either of the following can be done: test it or replace it together as one part. The various kinds of relays in the Maxima are as follows; Normally Open type and Normally Close type of relays. Examining entails putting an ohmmeter across the power circuit terminals with a view of establishing a continuity check and the use of jumper wires for energizing the relay. If the relay does not click or fail to pass the test, then it should be replaced.
