Nissan Quest Timing Belt Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing belt and Timing Sprocket, including preparation, removal, inspection, and reinstallation of components on Nissan Quest?
A: Again the timing system is intricate and due to some mistakes made a serious harm may be occasioned on the engine, as such, it is recommended that this exercise be carried out by highly skilled personnel only. The steps include; disconnecting the negative battery terminal, and draining the cooling system. Drivebelts should be detached entirely, and the nuts on the right front wheel loosened; the vehicle is then raised reasonably on jackstands with the parking brake engaged. Raise and support the car and then take off the right-front wheel followed by the removal of the splash shield, the pan, turn off the cooling system and drain it. Place the number one piston at the top dead center on the compression stroke and also, unscrew the spark plugs. Remove the radiator and bypass hoses from the thermostat housing, and then take the water pump pulley. Third, after loosening the bolt, it will be necessary to take out the air conditioning compressor idler pulley and bracket and then the crankshaft pulley removing the tension from the belt while making sure that the crank pulley does not turn. Release clamps and connectors at the upper timing belt cover; next, take off the bolts in the upper and lower timing belt covers while noting the positions of the bolts for reinstallation. Ensure that No1 piston is at the Top Dead Centre by super imposing the timing marks of the camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket. Reduce the tension on timing belt and locate an arrow that may point to the side facing out; sometimes this sign is missing, and so one has to make one before removing the belt. Slip out the timing belt off the sprockets, this belt must be replaced as soon as it is cracked or contaminated, examine also the condition of the tensioner, spring. Check on the conditions of the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets, removing the mounting bolt of the camshaft sprocket but locking it. You need to unscrew the sprocket by hand, you need to pay special attention to the R and L notes to make sure you do not fit the wrong sprocket. In installation turn the crankshaft with your hand at least two complete revolutions and start the engine; if you meet with any resistance you know that there is a problem. Make sure you confirm on the right belt for the car, this has to tally with the tooth design of the sprockets. Before fitting the timing belt, the factory chronological white lines should correspond to the punch marks on the camshaft sprockets and the crankshaft sprocket. If the belt had the tensioner detached, replace it, and make sure the spring is in the correct position then push the belt with the force in the specified amount of pounds to determine tension. Loosen the tensioner and make your corrections if compulsory, while determining the midpoint deflection of the belt between the two camshaft pulleys. Contact the strap using a feeler gauge in order to find the correct tension and then, tighten a nuts on tensioner. At last, once again check the tension of the belt, if required adjust the tension and place all the parts which are removed at the time of assembling.
