Release the parking brake and take off the brake drums; for 2012 and later Sedan and Note models, remove the hub cap from the brake drum and unscrew the spindle nut, ensuring to obtain a new nut for installation. If the brake drum is difficult to remove, access the adjuster lever through the backing plate, lift it off the adjusting wheel, and turn the wheel with another screwdriver to back off the brake shoes. All four rear brake shoes must be replaced simultaneously, but work on one brake assembly at a time to avoid mixing parts. Install the brake drum, and for 2015 and later Sedan and Note models, install a new hub nut and tighten it to the specified torque before installing the hub cap. Make a preliminary adjustment of the brake by turning the adjuster star wheel until the brakes just begin to drag on the drum, then back off until no dragging is heard. Depress the Brake Pedal firmly several times, rotate the drum to ensure no dragging occurs, and if necessary, back off the star wheel further. Mount the wheel, install the lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. Make several forward and reverse stops and operate the parking brake to adjust the brakes until satisfactory pedal action is achieved, then check the operation of the brakes carefully before driving.
