Before withdrawing and fitting the components that have been identified, you have to reduce pressure of fuel, and then take off the negative terminal of the battery and place it away from your working place. Jack up the front end of the car and remove the radiator. Turn the crankshaft until the number 1 spark plug hole aligns with TDC and then remove the courage. Take off the intake collector, rocker arm covers and turn the rocker arm shaft retaining bolt loose. Disconnect all drivebelts, the fan and the fan shroud, the air conditioning compressor idler pulley if fitted may also be removed. Locate the vibration damper and gradually loosen the fastners holding it in place, be careful not to let the crankshaft rotate. Remove the lower radiator hose and the metal connection pipe bolts on the engine block and finally the timing cover bolt. Make sure that the number 1 piston is now at TDC, and align timing mark on the timing belt pulleys. Lessen the tension of the timing belt, disconnect it and if it has developed cracks or worn out, it has to be replaced. Ready to install the new timing belt, direct the black arrow towards the front of the vehicle along with the factory white lines on the pulleys match the ones punched on the belt. If the tensioner has been removed, insert it in its rightful place and adjust the spring correctly; rotate the tensioner in a clockwise manner and partially tighten the lock-nut. Place all spark plugs back in and give the crankshaft a clockwise turn to get the number one piston back at TDC and there should be some resistance. For 1984 to 1987 models the tensioner locking nut needs to be loosened, then, by inserting a feeler gauge checking the tension, the belt tension should be adjusted to the next value when the gap is less than one. For 1988 and 1989 models, press the timing belt with force and proceeding the subsequent steps as for the previous parts before reinstalling the timing belt covers and other related parts.
