    Q:
How do you replace the steering gear boot on Nissan Maxima? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jack stands before removing the wheel. Next, remove the tie-rod end and jam nut. Take off the outer rack and pinion boot clamp by pinching the ends together and sliding it off, or cut off crimp-type clamps as necessary. Use diagonal cutters to cut off the inner boot retaining wire and slide the boot off. Before installing the new boot, wrap the threads on the end of the steering rod with tape to prevent damage to the small end of the new boot. Position the new boot on the steering gear until it seats in the groove on the steering rod, then install a new clamp. If the inner ends of the boots use wire type clamps, wrap a new retaining wire around the boot twice and twist the ends together four turns while applying a force of about 22 pounds. For crimp-type clamps, install new ones similarly to drive axle clamps. Remove the tape and install the tie-rod end, then install the wheel and lug nuts. Finally, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque.
