While removing the cables, always take off the cable from the negative battery terminal first and hook it up last because this may inadvertently cause a short circuit on the battery by using that tool you have to loosen the clamps on the cable. However, even if it is only a positive terminal cable that you are replacing, be sure to disconnect the negative cable from the battery before. Disconnect old cables from battery and follow each one of them to its opposite end and disconnect them. It is important to note how each cable was routed prior to disconnection for proper reinstallation. If any of your old cables needs replacement, carry them when going to buy new ones. Ensure that identical parts are used when replacing these cables. For instance, clean out rust or corrosion which may be present in threads of solenoid or ground connection using a wire brush. Also smear a little bit of petroleum jelly or a battery terminal corrosion inhibitor on the threads so that they do not corrode in future. Securely tighten down mounting nut/bolt after attaching cable to solenoid or ground connection. Before connecting a new cable to the battery, make sure it can reach from one post of the battery without being stretched over there. First attach positive battery cable then connect ground cable with negative terminal of the battery.
