    Q:
What is the role of the Evaporative Emissions Control (EVAP) system and Vapor Canister and how to inspect and replace on Nissan Pathfinder? Posted by Customer
    A:
Evaporative Emissions Control (EVAP) system plays a vital role in managing fuel vapors to prevent their release into the atmosphere. The EVAP system includes a canister packed with charcoal, along with several connecting lines to the fuel tank, ported vacuum, intake manifold vacuum and the fuel filler cap. Diagnostic trouble codes can be triggered by loose or missing or damaged fuel filler caps. During engine shut-off periods, it stores fuel vapors from the throttle body, fuel tank and intake manifold into the charcoal canister. When this engine is running, they are purged into the engine intake for combustion through a purge control valve that is operated by the PCM. This process is essential for emission control. The EVAP system complexity of 1996 and later models varies. There are extra components available in 1997 and newer models such as canister vent valve, canister purge valve, EVAP control system pressure sensor that facilitate on board diagnostics for detection of system leakages and monitoring its proper functionality. A stuck open purge control valve or carburator with liquid gas inside it will make your car's engine to flood when starting or cause hard starting. These range from poor idle conditions to stalling or other driveability problems resulting from defective parts like: canister purge control valve not sealing properly; damage to the canister; faulty hoses; broken vacuum hose connector on purge valve solenoid; broken carburetor return spring or misadjusted carburetor secondary linkage and many more possible causes of these particular issues listed above have not been mentioned here but many more could be given if you asked me anything about cars because I've been fixing them since I was twelve years old so just tell me what kind of problem do you have with it now. There are several causes for loss of fuel or odor such as leaks in fuel line(s), damaged canisters or inoperative valves/hoses etc. Inspection and replacement are necessary steps for damaged parts. The purge valve, vent valve and EVAP system pressure sensor tests resemble EGR control solenoid and MAP sensor testing but caution should be exercised with the sensor as not to apply more than 6.0 in-Hg of pressure to avoid damage. The canister replacement procedure depends on the model year and type of vehicle; however, it usually involves labeling and detaching vacuum lines, removing mounting bolts, and installing the new canister in reverse order.

    Q:
What is the function of the evaporative emissions control system for the 1998 Nissan Pathfinder? Posted by Customer
    A:
The function of the evaporative emissions control system is to draw fuel vapors from the gas tank and fuel system, store them in a charcoal canister, and route them to the intake manifold during normal engine operation.
