Q:
How do you remove the transfer case from Nissan Murano? Posted by Customer
A:
For 2006 and earlier models, begin by removing the engine/transaxle assembly, then perform the necessary steps to remove the transfer case. For 2007 and later models, start by removing the front wiper arms, followed by the left and right cowl trim covers, and then the wiper motor. Next, remove the cowl upper bracket and trace the electrical lead from the upstream oxygen sensor to disconnect its electrical connector. Remove the heat shield from the rear exhaust manifold/catalyst, loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle securely on jackstands, and remove the front wheels along with the engine under-cover and both inner fender splash shields. Remove the left and right driveaxles, ensuring to separate the control arms from the steering knuckle instead of detaching the struts. Proceed to remove the driveshaft, front exhaust pipe assembly, and the heat shield from the front suspension crossmember. Remove the catalyst support bracket bolts and the support bracket from the lower end of the rear catalyst, then disconnect the electrical lead from the downstream oxygen sensor. Remove the rear catalyst mounting fasteners and the rear catalyst from the rear exhaust manifold, followed by the rear exhaust manifold fasteners and the old exhaust manifold gasket. Disconnect the steering gear tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles, detach all power steering gear lines and hoses from the subframe, and unbolt the steering gear assembly, hanging it out of the way. Support the transaxle with a floor jack, placing wood between the jack head and the transaxle, and support the subframe with floor jacks on each side near the rear. Remove the upper bolt from the front engine mounting bracket, the bolts from the left engine mounting bracket, and the lower bolts from the rear engine mounting bracket. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors at the front and rear mounting brackets, detach the clips, and set the harnesses aside. Disconnect the stabilizer bar links from the stabilizer bar, then disconnect and remove the subframe support bracket bolts and the support brackets. Loosen the subframe front mounting bolts a few turns without removing them, then remove the subframe rear mounting bolts. Carefully lower the rear of the subframe enough to remove the transfer case, unbolt the support bearing bracket, and remove the right driveaxle assembly. Unbolt and remove the two transfer case support brackets, then remove the transfer case mounting bolts from the transfer side. Remove the power steering gear bracket from the rear engine mounting bracket, the upper bolts from the rear engine mounting bracket, and move the rear engine mounting bracket aside to remove the transfer case mounting bolts from the transaxle side. Finally, remove the transfer case, and installation is the reverse of removal.
