Q:
How do you remove and install the timing chain and timing chain tensioner on Nissan 240sx? Posted by Customer
A:
To change the timing chain in engines with a multitude of applications, make sure that the No. 1 piston is at top dead center (TDC) on compression stroke. If applicable, remove the front cover, camshaft cover, and fuel pump. When number one piston is at TDC, branding should be done on both timing marks of camshaft sprocket and chain as well as crankshaft sprocket and chain. Take out bolts from Camshaft Sprocket keeping Chain from falling due to contact with tensioner. Two-arm gear puller should be used to pull the Crankshaft Sprocket Assembly off. For installation, position Timing Chain and Camshaft Sprocket together with marked timing marks matching ensure that Camshaft And Crankshaft Keys are Pointing up. Additionally, if you have new chain and gear then align the timing marks on the chain with those on the sprockets while ensuring that keys are pointing upwards. The correct relationship between mating marks is represented by a specific number of pins. This will be effected depending on whether it is KA24E or KA24DE engine model. Finally, install chain tensioner and front cover assembly. There will be no need to remove them in case guides were made use of except when they are worn out completely for which replacement must take place. Turn crankshaft to top dead center (TDC) when adjusting timing chain because it has stretched until notch in camshaft sprocket location is left of oblong groove in camshaft retaining plate and therefore requires adjustment; Remove Camshaft Sprocket As Well As Chain Before Reinstalling Them But Using Different Dowel In Another Hole Of The Sprocket-No 2 Or 3; Align Timing Marks On Chain And Sprocket And Shift By Four Degrees Of Crank Shaft Rotation Each Time; Check Valve Timing And If Cannot Move Notch To Right Side Of Groove Then Replace Timing Chain If It Is Beyond Repair. In 240SX and 1990-92 Stanza models with KA24E engine, first, disconnect the negative battery cable, secondly set the No. 1 piston at TDC of the compression stroke, then remove the front cover. On the other hand, if necessary, define timing marks; hold camshaft sprocket stationary and remove its bolt. After that remove chain tensioner and guides; next, remove timing chain as shown in Figure 6. Remove oil slinger on sprocket, oil pump drive gear (which is beneath it) and crankshaft gear. For installation purposes put crankshaft sprocket, oil pump drive gear together with oil slinger on end of crankshaft facing toward front. Install camshaft sprocket with bolt and washer to face forward as well as torque bolt to hold sprocket in position. See for yourself that No 1 piston is at TDC! Make sure timing chain marks align with sprockets before torquing camshaft sprocket bolts tightly. Later install chain tensioner, chain guide along with front cover before reconnecting negative battery cable. In KA24DE model of 240SX release fuel system pressure first; disconnect negative battery cable from terminal; drain cooling as well as engine oils Remove cylinder head assembly by torquing off bolts around it which will give room to clean mating surfaces of Block and Head In addition replace cylinder gasket after ensuring that all worn out components have been replaced while mating surfaces are clean Install Crank Shaft Sprocket ensuring mating marks face front and rotate crank shaft to set No1 Piston TDC Put Idler Sprocket And Lower Timing Chain Followed By Chain Tension Arm Chain Guide As Well As Lower Timing Chain Tensioner For Front Cover Assembly Install-All Remaining Components Should Be Reinstalled in Reverse Order Neg Battery Cable Should Be Reconnected, Fluid Levels Refilled And Vehicle Road Tested.
