Q:
How do you remove and reinstall the rear axle assembly and associated components from a Nissan Juke? Posted by Customer
A:
Chock the front wheels, jack up the rear of the car, and support it on axle stands before removing both rear roadwheels. Unscrew the brake master cylinder fluid reservoir cap and place it on a piece of polythene to minimize fluid loss. Undo the bolt securing the ABS wheel speed sensor to the hub/stub axle assembly on each side, withdraw the sensors, and unclip the sensor wiring from the rear axle. Remove the handbrake shoes from inside the rear brake discs, unbolt the handbrake cables, and withdraw them from the lower part of the brake backplate. Undo the support bracket retaining bolts and release the handbrake cables from their attachments on the rear axle. Slacken the union nuts and disconnect the brake pipes from the flexible hose unions on the rear axle, plugging the pipe and hose ends to minimize fluid loss and prevent dirt entry into the hydraulic system. Remove the retaining clips and release the two flexible hoses from their mounting brackets, then remove the rear coil springs. Support the weight of the axle assembly using two trolley jacks or one trolley jack with a length of wood, requiring assistance. Undo the four bolts on each side securing the axle front mounting brackets to the underbody, then check that all necessary components have been disconnected and positioned to avoid hindrance during removal. Carefully lower the axle assembly out of position and remove it from underneath the vehicle, allowing for the removal of brake components and hub bearing units. If necessary, remove the front mounting brackets by unscrewing the retaining nut and withdrawing the centre through-bolt, noting that new through-bolt retaining nuts will be required for reassembly. Refit any components removed from the axle as applicable, and if the front mounting brackets were removed, refit them and lightly tighten the new through-bolt nuts. Support the axle on trolley jacks and position the assembly under the rear of the vehicle, then raise the jacks and lightly tighten the front mounting bracket retaining bolts. With all bolts in place, work progressively in a diagonal sequence to tighten all bolts to the specified torque, then refit the rear coil springs. Refit the brake hydraulic pipes and flexible hoses along with the retaining clips, tightening the union nuts securely. Reconnect the handbrake cables to the brake backplates and underbody supports, then refit the handbrake shoes and rear brake discs. Refit the ABS wheel speed sensors, tightening the retaining bolts to the specified torque, bleed the complete brake hydraulic system, and adjust the handbrake. Finally, refit the roadwheels and lower the vehicle to the ground, ensuring that with the vehicle on its wheels at normal ride height, the new front mounting bracket through-bolt nuts are tightened to the specified torque.
