Replacement of the evaporator core is a difficult procedure for the home mechanic, involving removal of the entire dashboard, console, and many wiring connectors. If you attempt it at home, keep track of the assemblies by taking notes and keeping screws and other hardware in small, marked plastic bags for reassembly. Have the refrigerant discharged at a dealer service department or an automotive air conditioning repair facility. Remove the expansion valve. Drain the cooling system. If the coolant is relatively new, or is in good condition, save it and re-use it. Move aside the lower dash insulation to access the heater core pipes. Disconnect the heater hoses from the pipes protruding through the firewall. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the evaporator. Plug all open fittings of disconnected lines to prevent entry of dirt and moisture into the lines. Remove the steering column. Remove the entire instrument panel assembly. Disconnect the connectors for various components. Disconnect the evaporator drain hose. Remove the instrument panel support beam and the heating and air conditioning unit as a complete assembly, and place the assembly on a work bench. For 2013 and earlier models/2014 and later Rogue Select models, remove the evaporator lower case cover fasteners and side case cover fasteners then remove both covers. Slide the evaporator out of the HVAC housing. For 2014 and later models (except Rogue Select models), remove the heater core. Remove the intake air door motor fasteners and motor. Remove the mix air door motor fasteners and motor. Separate the HVAC housing and remove the evaporator. Installation is the reverse of removal, noting various steps such as using new O-rings for the refrigerant lines, adding refrigerant oil if a new evaporator was installed, tightening the expansion valve bolts, refilling the cooling system, reconnecting the battery, performing necessary re-learn procedures, checking for leaks and proper system operation, and checking the operation of all electrical components of the steering column and dash. Have the air conditioning system recharged by the shop that discharged it.
