    Q:
How do you remove the steering gear on Nissan Pathfinder? Posted by Customer
    A:
To start with, the rim lugs in front have to be loosened and the front part of the car raised on jack stands for the removal of Rack And Pinion on Pathfinder models. The under-vehicle splash shield is detached and the wheels are removed. Opposite side of a cross-member brace should be removed first and then undo a pinch bolt at the universal joint coupling shaft. Take off an anti-sway bar bracket and release outer tie-rod end joints from knuckles. Situate a drain pan beneath the gear housing, disconnect fluid pressure hoses from it, remove clamps holding the power steering line to a cross member, and unscrew brackets that fixate this line at frame ends. Take down the gear housing from brackets that secure it to frame rails and install a new unit following disassembly steps in reverse order in which they were taken out of their positions. Disengage power steering return line (low-pressure) and pressure (high-pressure) tubes from Rack And Pinion assembly always remembering their locations for proper reattachment after finishing work on gearbox or when removing it for resealing purposes. Note: If you are installing a new gearbox pitman arm must be separated from its sector shaft. Reverse order of procedure is used to replace damaged or defective gears. To commence with in Frontier as well as Xterra make sure you unscrew hydraulic pipes connecting these gears to pump units themselves. Indicate location where splines on lower intermediate shaft mate up with those found on input one; using pliers, take out bolt securing both parts together firmly enough so that they do not move around while being driven off road occasionally by rough surface conditions or other external factors such as heavy rainfall which cause severe vibrations due lack sufficient damping effect within suspension system even when original shock absorbers are still intact enough so as not need replacement during overhaul process every couple years when there might come some signs indicating possible failure soon occurring again anyway because most likely reason could just be poor quality material used manufacturing these components being unable withstand heavy-duty duty cycles associated them; next step involves disconnecting relay bar end attached steering arm through releasing nut connecting two parts together tightly without turning either at other end, remove joint attaching it with rod; afterwards go ahead removing nuts bolts securing Rack And Pinion frame rails carefully avoiding any harm either coverings or themselves; (please remember that an installed new one); finally test level refill if necessary.
