Remove all external components from the head for thorough cleaning and inspection. Ensure the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block are perfectly clean before installation, using a gasket scraper and cleaning with lacquer thinner or acetone. Check for nicks or damage on the mating surfaces, chase threads in the head bolt holes with a tap, and clean with compressed air.

Lightly oil the threads of the new cylinder head bolts, install them finger tight, and ensure the washers are correctly positioned. Follow the recommended sequence to tighten the bolts in five steps to the specified torque, then tighten the small bolt on the outside of the cylinder head.

Examine the valve seats in each of the combustion chambers for pitting, cracking, or burning, which indicates the need for valve service beyond home mechanic capabilities.

Before the valves are removed, they should be labeled and stored along with their related components to ensure they can be reinstalled in the same valve guides they were removed from.

Install the valves with light oiling on the stems into the valve guides. Install the valve spring seat(s) in place on the cylinder head. For SOHC engines, install the outer valve spring seat first, then the inner valve spring seat second. After positioning the valve spring seat(s) correctly, install the valve seals over the top of the valve tips by hand, using the stem of the valves as a guide. To install the oil seals firmly over the guides, use a seal installation tool or an appropriate-size deep socket, gently tapping each seal into place until it is properly seated.
