    Q:
How to remove and install lower control arms on Nissan Frontier? Posted by Customer
    A:
To avoid mistakes and properly remove and install lower control arms on a two-wheel drive Frontier and two-wheel Xterra models,Firstly, loosen wheel lug nuts, lift a vehicle, and support it with jack stands placed under the frame rails. Take off the wheel then remove torsion bar and torque arm. At this moment you can separate stabilizer bar link from lower control arm. Later remove shock absorbers lower mounting bolt. In case of 2WD Frontier models, release tension rod from the bottom arm. To get your lower control arm off steering knuckle, slightly loose balljoint nut before using balljoint separator to relieve balljoint from knuckle. Then take out nut. Thereafter, you can proceed to remove the lower control arm pivot bolt(s) and nut(s) by watching the way they were facing when these steps are done lower control arm could be removed for replacement if necessary. Finally reinstalling is in reverse order of removal except ensuring proper tightening of nuts and bolts or wheel lug nuts as well as alignment checks as outlined in instructions For 4WD Frontier and 4WD Xterra models: Start by loosening wheel lug nuts; raise vehicle and secure with jackstands under frame rails; remove wheel; then remove locking hub assembly along with snap-ring from driveaxle; next take out torsion bar along with torque arm; undo stabilizer bar link from the low control arm; finally unbolt shock absorber low mounting bolt. Unbolt driveaxle inner CV joint from differential drive flange. Remove lower control arm pivot bolts/nuts, separate lower control arm from frame brackets, support driveaxle to prevent it from hanging by outer CV joint. Gently tap end of driveaxle with soft face hammer to disengage driveaxle from hub splines, then pull out axle shaft assembly.; remove cotter pin then back-off (but do not remove) nut from lower ball joint; employ a two-jaw puller to free the ball-stud from steering knuckle; and finally turn off nuts and disconnect lower control arm from steering knuckle. Inspect bushings for wear, hardening, or cracks if found replace bushings. Finally reinstalling is in reverse order of removal except ensuring proper tightening of nuts and bolts or wheel lug nuts as well as torque values for the driveaxle inner flange bolts and the locking hub bolts. For Pathfinder models: Start by loosening wheel lug nuts; raise vehicle and support with jackstands beneath subframe rails; remove wheel; then remove balljoint-to-lower control arm nuts (on Pathfinder models, you can unbolt the balljoint from the control arm by removing the three nuts). Pull up on balljoint to separate it from control arm. Next remove front pivot bolt nut from lower arm, also rear bushing bracket bolts, and detach control arm from frame. In case of 4WD models before you take off ball joint out of steering knuckle first remove driveaxle. Look carefully at bushings for wear, hardening, or cracks where necessary replacing them. Forward control arm bushing is replaceable with special tools while rear bushing can be slid off pin of control arm Installation follows the reverse of the removal process except ensuring proper tightening of including torque values for wheel lug nuts as well as pivot bolt nut or bushing bracket bolts.
