Q:
How to remove and install door handles,Door Latch Assembly and locks on Nissan Xterra? Posted by Customer
A:
Take out the door trim panel and the plastic water-shield. Remove the latch retaining screws from the end of the door, then reach inside the door to release the latch from the control rods. Certain models have a stiffening brace that must be removed to gain access to the rear of the latch. For any vehicle with power door locks, unplug its electrical connector. Unhook the door latch, and if it exists, unfasten the door lock solenoid. Installation will be done in reverse from removal. If present, separate electrical contact from locking cylinder. A screwdriver or pliers can be used to take off this part's locking cylinder retaining clip. Move lock outward so that it separates itself from door and lock cylinder control rod. In some cases, one has to disentangle a clip which attaches control rod and lock cylinder together. Take off control link rod connected to outer handle then remove outer handle retaining nuts and pull handle away from door. For front doors, holes in door frame provide access for removing outside handle retaining nuts. On vehicles with rear doors, pry out trim caps so as to get at exterior handle retention nuts.Installation is accomplished by reversing above removal procedures.Pull off the plate concealing control rod guide.Release retaining screws, pulling handle free of hinge then unfastening control rods from behind inside handles.Pull back on screw retainer cover. If available at all,the inside handle retaining screw should be detached such that it slides back into place away from its attachment point on a nearby wall.Installation is carried out in reverse order as compared to removal process.

A:
Start by removing the door trim panel. Then, release the control rod guide clip. Remove the retaining screws and pull the handle free from the door. Finally, disconnect the control rods from the rear of the inside handle. If there is a retaining screw trim cover, pry it out before detaching the inside handle retaining screw. Slide the handle back to disengage it from the door. The installation process is the reverse of removal.
