All models except 1993 are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SAS), commonly known as an airbag. Models from 1994 and 1995 feature only a driver's airbag, while those from 1996 onward include two airbags, one for the driver and one for the front seat passenger, designed to protect occupants from serious injury in frontal collisions. The SAS system comprises an SAS unit with a sating sensor, self-diagnosis circuit, back-up power circuit, front impact sensor (for 1994 and 1995 models), and airbag assemblies located in the steering wheel and dashboard. For deployment, an impact or sating sensor must be activated, closing the circuit to inflate the airbag; if the battery fails, a back-up power unit activates. A self-diagnosis circuit indicates system status with a light that should extinguish after six seconds if functioning properly; any malfunction requires immediate inspection. When servicing components near the SRS system, bright yellow wiring harnesses should not be unplugged or tested with electrical equipment to prevent accidental airbag deployment, and the SRS system must be disabled beforehand by disconnecting the battery negative cable and waiting ten minutes. To disable the driver's side airbag, the access panel in the steering wheel must be removed to unplug the connector, while for the passenger side, the panel below the glove box must be removed to access the two-pin electrical connector. After servicing, the airbag connectors should be reconnected, the panels reinstalled, the ignition turned off, and the negative battery cable reattached. For removal and installation of the passenger side airbag, the battery cable must be disconnected and the necessary panels removed to access the airbag unit, which is then reinstalled in reverse order.
