    Q:
What are the features and safety mechanisms of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and Air Bag in Nissan Versa? Posted by Customer
    A:
These models are fitted with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), this is generally referred to as the Airbag, with functions that protect the driver and the passenger from severe injury in the case of head on collision, while certain models come with front and side torso airbags and roof rail airbags. All models' diagram features a diagnostic control unit positioned on the floor beneath the central console. The airbag modules are like a cushion and inflater unit that are housed in a single entity; the inflater assembly is on the back body of the housing which by sending an electrical signal from the system through a spiral cable, an electrically conductive tape in the form of a flat ribbon initiates the inflation of the bag effectively on the instant. Airbag modules are mounted at the steering wheel, at the top side of the glove box on the right side of the car and at the seat backs and along the roof rails of some models. The diagnosis/sensor unit that is part of the assembly has a microprocessor that continuously oversees the system's performance and offers a crash sensor, which checks the unit every time the vehicle is started; when functional, the "AIRBAG" light will quickly light up then turn off. A permanent light entails a malfunction whereby service is required to be done immediately. The diagnosis/sensor unit is mounted in the center console and the crash zone sensor is on the radiator support while side airbag sensors are found in the door "B" pillar. The impact sensors require the circuit to the inflater to be closed to make the airbags inflate. A self-diagnosis circuit shows a light on the INSTRUMENT PANEL when the ignition is on; if this light does not work as a normal light, there could be a problem when it is taken for inspection. While operating in the vicinity of SRS components, the system must be turned off by releasing the steering wheel to its straight position, push the ignition switch button into LOCK position, remove/short the battery terminal, and complete the action by touching any metal on the car to discharge the static electricity. Airbag system was mentioned earlier to be disabled after the servicing and once this is done one is supposed to reconnect the required parts, make sure the vehicle is not occupied by anybody, and be certain that the air bag warning light works well. The driver's air bag and spiral cable can be get after the demolding of the steering wheel; the passenger's air bag module can be got after the demolding of the instrument panel. Each type includes pyrotechnic units installed in the front seat belt retractors which are connected to the seat belt system and activated during an impact to tighten them, and any work on seats should involve deactivation of the airbag system for its presence near the seat; kicking the pillars or floor pan is prohibited unless the airbag system has been turned off.
