    Q:
How should you check and install piston rings before engine assembly on Nissan Quest? Posted by Customer
    A:
When preparing the piston to take the new piston rings ensure the end gaps of the rings are correct in by checking on the piston ring side clearance. Prepare the piston/connecting rod assemblies and the new ring sets and lay them side-by-side in a manner that you place same piston on same cylinder during gap measurement and engine fitting. Push the top ring into the first cylinder, aligning it with the cylinder walls using the piston, put it as low as possible in the cylinder. End gap should be measured with feeler gauges between the rings ends till the right thickness is obtained and the ring must be in correct position in the cylinder bore. If the gap is too small use a file to trim the rings or replace the set as guided by the ring material being used. Additional end gap is not such a problem as long as it is over 0.040 inches; check for conformity to the maximum standards. If filing is necessary, take a file and secure it in a vise then apply lubrication on the jaws of the cylinder head then slide the ring backward and forward movement and at the same time check the gap for the right measurement then de burred in the edges. Do the same for all the rings, in all the cylinders, making sure to keep the rings, pistons, and cylinders synonymous. Once the end gaps are corrected install the rings on the pistons, the oil control ring is made up of three parts. Closely fit the spacer/expander into the grove with the anti-rotation tang in its right position and then fix the lower and upper side rail in place but it is preferred not to use a piston ring installation tool as it may harm the metal part. Once the oil ring components have been installed, centrifuge the side rails to ensure they easily run along the groove. Subsequently, put in the second ring (its identification mark should be placed upwards on the cylinder) using a piston ring installation tool; The second ring must be pushed into the middle slot without stretching it too much. Lastly, have the top ring fitted just like the previous one, with the mark at the top; as applied for the rest of the pistons and rings.

    Q:
How to install new piston rings on Nissan Frontier? Posted by Customer
    A:
Make sure you have checked the clearance that exists between the side of the piston and rings before installing piston rings. Organize the assembly of pistons/rods and new ring sets to correspond with the same cylinder and pistons for end gap measurement during engine installation. Fit the first cylinder with top (number one) ring, by pressing it down using its top thereby aligning it with cylinders walls. Place that ring towards the bottom of a cylinder since some measurements should be taken at this location. For end gap measurement, use feeler gauges and locate a gauge that slightly drags upon closing it, which is essentially similar to the width of the opening when completely shut. At any rate, compare this value to specifications; if it is beyond or below those values you need to have correct rings at hand before continuing on your way. If the gap is too small, either file them in order to fit or replace them depending on their material and type. The maximum specified end gap will depart from excess end gap, which is not as critical unless greater than 0.040-inch. In case filing becomes necessary, files should be used carefully in cutting up edges around ring gaps. Keep all parts matched while going through all cylinders for each ring repeatedly doing this task until completion Once you are through with checking or correcting gaps in ring ends, commence installing rings onto pistons Begin with oil control ring by inserting expander/spacer into groove making sure anti-rotation tab (if present) is properly positioned and install side rails without using any ring installation tool Verify smooth movement of lower and upper side rails within a groove meant for a ring The stamp can typically be found toward number two (middle) rings; insert it facing upwards into a piston with extreme caution not to overexpand these while putting them on Take care also not to mix up different cross-sections between upper most part marked "TOP" and one embossed "2ND", which designates number one (top) ring. All pistons and their rings will be subjected to this procedure again.

    Q:
What is the procedure for measuring the end gap of the top (number one) ring in the first cylinder for the 2004 Nissan Xterra? Posted by Customer
    A:
To measure the end gap of the top (number one) ring in the first cylinder, insert the ring into the cylinder near the bottom, align it with the cylinder walls using the piston's top, and use feeler gauges to find a gauge that matches the gap width with a slight drag. Compare this measurement to the specifications.
