Q:
How do you replace the extension housing oil seal to address oil leaks on Nissan Pathfinder? Posted by Customer
A:
Oil leaks frequently occur due to wear of the extension housing oil seal, which is located at the extreme rear of the transmission. To replace the seal, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the driveshaft. Using a seal removal tool or a large screwdriver, carefully pry the old seal out of the extension housing, then using a seal driver, a large section of pipe or a very large deep socket as a drift, install the new oil seal. Lubricate the splines of the transmission output shaft and the outside of the driveshaft yoke with lightweight grease, then install the driveshaft. Be careful not to damage the lip of the new seal.

Q:
How do you handle the situation if the new oil seal does not fit properly into the extension housing during installation on Nissan 240sx with Automatic transmission? Posted by Customer
A:
To successfully replace the driveshaft entails lifting of the vehicle to a position where the installment and removal of the shaft will could be done easily. Match the driveshaft and differential companion flanges to eliminate the problem of vibration. Perform the following: unwind the screw of the companion flange and reduce the droplight of the driveshaft from the differential, removing it from the transmission case, and, to prevent loss of its liquid, close the hole at the extension end of theshaft. It is advised that proper tool has to be used in order to remove the oil seal from the extension. For installation, clean all seal contact surfaces and put some amount of clean transmission fluid on the lip of the new seal. Insert the new seal into the extension housing of the machine and drive it with the correct drift tool. Place the shaft of the drive into the housing of the extension and align the splines of the two properly. Lift the driveshaft vertical with the companion flange marking, after that, you can install the flange and tighten the bolts with the torque of 29-33 ft. lbs. Last, briefly jacked up the car and check the fluid level, if required then pour some more into it.
