To check the VSS, disconnect its connector and turn the ignition ON without starting the engine. Then, use a voltmeter to measure voltage between the sensor connector and ground, expecting approximately 1 to 5 volts on one of the sensor wires. If necessary, remove the VSS and connect a voltmeter set to the AC scale to check for voltage pulses while spinning the sensor drive gear; a lack of pulsing voltage indicates the need for sensor replacement.
