    Q:
How do you remove and install a driveaxle on Nissan Altima? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before beginning the procedure of the axle shaft's removal, first unscrew the front wheel lug nuts, lift the vehicle, and place it on jackstands then take off the wheel. Subsequently, take out the cotter pin and slacken and expose the nut of the axle shaft/hub of yours using the prybar through two wheel studs of the car. Subsequently, it is necessary to unscrew the lock nut and washer from the end of the axle shaft, then to unfasten the wheel speed sensor from the steering knuckle and to disconnect the brake hose from the suspension strut. The brake caliper has to be unbolted and must be fixed at a position where it will not touch the hose; preferably suspend by a wire. Go forward to remove the lower strut mounting bolts to relieve the connection of the strut to the steering knuckle and subsequently, to extrude the axle shaft out of the hub. If the splines are frozen in the axle shaft, drive it gently with the end of a soft-faced hammer or free it with the help of a puller. Locate the under-vehicle splash shield and unbolt it, consequently getting a drain pan beneath the transaxle assembly to accommodate any dripping or spilled lubricant. As for the left axle shaft to have the inner CV joint disconnected from the transaxle, and on the other hand, to have the right axle shaft disconnected from the support bracket by unbolting the retainer to the bracket respectively, noting the position of the bearing in respect to the bracket then pulling out the axle shaft assembly. Do not ever split the bearing from the inner CV joint until when the entire combination is on a stand. The axle shaft oil seal seems to have been worn out completely, a new one should have to be fitted in. For installation reverse the removal steps, and make sure, that you press the left axle shaft in sharply as the retaining ring has to fit into its groove, tighten the bolts for the right axle shaft, fasten the strut to the steering knuckle bolts, the axle shaft/hub nut and the brake caliper mounting bolts, all to the specified torque. Last, fit the wheel and the lug nuts; drop the car; torque the lug nuts; and examine the quantity of the lubricant in the transaxle; if low, add until the level reaches the standard one.
