When reinstalling the drive axle in Pathfinder models, inspect the needle bearing in the knuckle for wear and ensure the correct orientation. Install the thrust washer on the drive axle with the chamfer facing the axle's center. Lubricate necessary parts, guide the drive axle into position, and reconnect it. Connect the ball joint to the control arm, check the O-rings on the drive flange, and finalize the installation.

The rear axle assembly is of the hypoid, semi-floating type. This design allows the outer rear wheel to rotate at a higher speed than the inner wheel when the vehicle is turning a corner.

To install the differential, follow the reverse of the removal procedure. Make sure to tighten the mounting fasteners securely, as well as the driveshaft and drive axle fasteners, to their specified torque.

To check for play in the CV joints and drive axle shafts, you can grasp each axle and rotate it in both directions while holding the CV joint housings. This can help identify any excessive movement or play in the joints.

Pry out the axleshaft oil seal using a seal removal tool. Then, use a seal installer to drive in the new axleshaft oil seal. Make sure to wipe the bore in the axle housing clean before proceeding.

It's important to inspect the boots on the drive axles periodically for any damage or signs of leaking lubricant. If either boot on a drive axle is damaged, that drive axle needs to be removed in order to replace the boot.
