The spark plugs work in harmony with the engine to produce high efficiency and it is good practice to fit the correct spark plugs for the vehicle. If the correct type is used and the condition of the engine is ok, then one rarely needs to look at the spark plugs before their scheduled time for renewal. The appearance of the spark plugs can also give an indication of the condition of the engine; cleaned, white insulator indicate either a hot spark plug or a problem with the management system, hard black deposits may show a problem in the system. Black and oily in nature, if the plugs resemble this then there is more than likely wear to the engine, light tan to greyish-brown would indicate a healthy engine. The spark plug's electrode gap is essential to efficiency, and it should set accordingly to its standardized measurement. Tighten to correct position the outer electrode with feeler blade while the centre electrode is not to be bent or curved for avoiding the crack at insulator. These include motor accessory shops from which special tools for adjusting the gap are available. Ensure that the threaded connector sleeves are screwed tightly and that the areas of contact of the plug require assembly are clean. Each of the plug is to be inserted by hand and when done the right side of the thread is to be brought inside till an equal torque is reached with the torque wrench. Replace the ignition coils, and tighten the wiring connectors; replace the air inlet hose on the 1.2 litre car or the inlet manifold on the 1.6 litre car.
