    Q:
How to replace the timing chain and Variable Timing Sprocket on Nissan Titan? Posted by Customer
    A:
The timing chain procedure for such engines is complex, which cannot be easily performed by a home mechanic; however, the following steps should be done-marking all the removed parts, noting the length and place of various bolts, and taking an instant or a digital picture for references. This is a process that needs the engine to be extracted from the car and having the suitable apparatus and equipment. Timing is rather delicate, and even the simplest of mistakes can lead to extensive engine damage The task should only be carried out by highly experienced personnel and any work done should be thoroughly checked before the engine is started. Start with solving fuel pressure, removal of the top engine cover, and spark plugs with the number 1 piston at the top dead center on the compression stroke. Remove the negative battery cable, pull off the drive belt and idler pulley assembly, evacuate the cooling system and engine oil, and also, release the radiator and cooling fans. Once the engine is removed from the car, make sure that the crankshaft does not rotate while you remove the crankshaft pulley and that number one piston be on the TDC. Loosen the tension from the left timing chain tensioner, remove the left hand timing chain and sprockets then do the same for the right. Look at camshaft and crankshaft sprockets for the signs of wear or looseness, also to ensure that the timing chains are the correct ones check the links and colored marks located around them. Before installing additional components, crankshaft sprockets and camshaft sprockets should be fitted as well as bolts should be tightened in a manner that would stop rotatory motion of camshafts. Position the timing chains to the correct marks, specify the tension guides and the tensioners, and then make sure all the assemblies are in their correct position before removing the holding pins. Screw in the oil pump and the drive spacer and make sure that it fits appropriately; on surfaces where the new O-rings and the RTV sealant will be needed, be sure to wipe them clean. Returning this assembly to truck, fit the timing chain cover, the upper timing chain covers and the crank shaft pulley bolts following the specified pattern. Following overhauling involves; running the engine without starting it to see whether it rotates freely, changing the oil filter, re-attaching the crankcase and cooling system, and running the engine while examining for any leakage.
