Q:
How do the back-up light and neutral position switches function as a dual-purpose switch, and How to test and replace them on Nissan Sentra? Posted by Customer
A:
The back-up light and the neutral position switch are integrated into one, which is also called the PNP switch. To test first remove the switch electrical connector. In Reverse there ought to be continuity in the back-up light switch circuits; the switch must be open in Neutral and in all other gears between terminals 1 and 2. The neutral position switch should have continuity in neutral and all other gears, but the button should be open in Reverse between tabs 2 and 3. In this case, one has to replace the switch because its continuity does not conform to the above-specified parameters. In this case, when replacing, the candidate should be careful as transaxle fluid may drain when the switch is removed and the change process may take some time so it is recommended to have a drain pan nearby. To start with, ensure that the car is raised and stabilized using jackstands, then remove the electrical connector of the switch. Take the switch out from the transaxle by unscrewing it, and apply thin layer of fresh oil to an O-ring that is purchased for this purpose and then screw the switch back firmly. Last, the installation process should be concluded with the reversal of the removal procedures and filling of the transaxle with more fluid if needed.
