    Q:
How do you remove and replace the ignition switch and lock cylinder in Nissan Quest? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the steering column covers and driver's side knee bolster. Check the IGN SW maxi-fuse in the main engine compartment fuse/relay panel. For 1996 and later models, follow the ignition switch harness down to the connector at the bottom of the steering column and disconnect it; for 1995 and earlier models, disconnect the connector from the ignition switch. Check the white/purple wire at the harness side of the connector for battery voltage. If there is no voltage, check the circuit from the connector to the fuse-relay panel. If voltage is present and the ignition switch is not functioning correctly, check the ignition switch for continuity, testing at the switch side of the connector for 1996 and later models. If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch. Check the ignition lock cylinder in each position to ensure it isn't worn or loose and that the key position corresponds to the markings on the housing. Disable the airbag system. For 1996 and later models, remove the steering wheel and the upper and lower steering column shrouds. For 1995 and earlier models, turn the ignition key ignition lock cylinder to the Run position, unplug the connector at the ignition switch, and remove the two switch-mounting screws. Disengage the ignition switch from the actuator pin and remove it, ensuring the actuator pin is in the Run position for installation. Place the new switch in position on the actuator pin and install the screws, moving the switch back and forth if necessary to align the screw holes. For 1996 and later models, remove the ignition lock cylinder, lower the steering column, and use a drill to remove the two shear-head bolts securing the ignition switch/lock housing to the steering column. Remove the switch/housing with its wiring harness, replacing it as a unit if faulty. Installation is the reverse of removal, tightening the new bolts until the breakaway heads break off. Disable the airbag system. For 1995 and earlier models, remove the lower steering column cover; for 1996 and later models, remove the upper and lower steering column covers. Turn the ignition key to the On position, depress the retaining pin, and pull the cylinder out, ensuring to catch the small spring that will pop out. When reinstalling, position the small spring under the rod on the cylinder and slide it into the housing until the retaining pin pops back into place. Insert the key and check the ignition lock cylinder for proper operation, completing the installation in reverse order of removal.
