Disconnect the negative cable at the battery and place it out of the way to prevent accidental contact with the negative terminal. Position the transmission in Reverse and raise the vehicle, ensuring it is securely supported on jackstands. Locate the back up wire on the side of the transmission and disconnect the electrical contact leads from the switch. Use an ohm meter to check for continuity by placing the leads onto the terminals of the switch; continuity should only be present in Reverse while shifting through the gears with assistance. If the switch does not pass the test, unscrew it from the transmission case and replace it with a new one.

Reverse the removal procedures and check the fluid level.

Next, disconnect the electrical connections.
