Use the formulN = T + A - V, where N is the thickness of the new lifter, T is the thickness of the old lifter, A is the valve clearance measured, and V is the desired valve clearance.

The machine shop will remove the valves and springs, recondition or replace the valves and valve seats, recondition or replace the valve guides, check and replace the valve springs, spring retainers, and valve stem keepers (as necessary), replace the valve seals with new ones, reassemble the valve components, and ensure the installed spring height is correct. The cylinder head gasket surface will also be resurfaced if it's warped.

After replacing the lifters, reinstall the camshafts, and complete the installation in reverse order of removal.

Place the special valve lifter tools in position, depress the valve lifter, and install the new adjusting shim, measuring the clearance with a feeler gauge to ensure accuracy.

A home mechanic can remove and disassemble the heads, perform the initial cleaning and inspection, and then reassemble and deliver them to an automotive machine shop for the actual service work.
