To remove the steering wheel, first disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and set the wheels in the straight ahead position. Next, remove the airbag module by prying off the covers to access the bolts, removing the bolts on each side of the steering wheel, and unplugging the two connectors after prying up the locking tabs. Lock the steering in the straight ahead position and remove the nut, noting the aligning marks on the wheel and shaft, and disconnect the cruise control wire plug. If the steering wheel does not slide off the shaft splines, use a two-jaw puller to remove it, ensuring not to hammer on the steering wheel or shaft. If necessary, remove the steering column covers, the wiper/washer switch, and the turn signal switch, then remove the screws and release the tab at the top to take out the airbag spiral cable. For installation, verify that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead. If the spiral cable has been removed or its center position lost, turn it clockwise until it becomes hard to turn, then rotate it about 2-1/2 turns counterclockwise until the marks align and the location pin is at the 12 o'clock position. Feed the airbag spiral cable harness through the hub in the steering wheel, then slip the wheel onto the shaft, ensuring the marks are aligned and the spiral cable pin is engaged with the corresponding hole in the back of the steering wheel. Install the steering wheel retaining nut and tighten it to the specified torque, then install the airbag module and tighten the bolts to the specified torque before installing the covers. Reconnect the battery and perform the necessary re-learn procedures. Finally, with your body out of the path of the airbag, verify that the airbag circuit is operational by turning the ignition key to the On or Start position, ensuring the "AIR BAG" warning light illuminates for a few seconds and then turns off.
