    Q:
How to accurately test a battery on Nissan Xterra? Posted by Customer
    A:
To test a battery, disconnect the cables and perform a state of charge test. Use a digital voltmeter for an open circuit voltage test and a battery load testing tool for a load test. To check for a constant drain, disconnect the negative cable and attach a test light. To replace, remove the hold-down clamp, lift out the battery, inspect the tray, and replace with a battery of the same specs. Installation is the reverse of removal.

    Q:
What is the routine preventive maintenance program for the battery in your Nissan Frontier? Posted by Customer
    A:
The battery in your vehicle must have a routine preventive maintenance for quick starts that are reliable. Do not do anything on the battery before you have all the necessary equipment for safety including the following: face shield, or safety goggles, baking soda, petroleum jelly, battery post or cable cleaner, treated felt washers, puller and rubber gloves. Like turning off the engine and all accessories and disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal, precautions must be taken while servicing it. Because hydrogen gas is flammable and explosive; avoid sparks , spark producing tools or open flames around it, as well as charging in an adequately ventilated area. This electrolyte consists of sulfuric acid which is both poisonous and corrosive; thus care should be taken to protect eyes, skin and clothing by wearing safety glasses. Check to ensure that there are no loose connections or damages on the external part of the battery. Remove the battery if there is corrosion. The cable ends must be cleaned thoroughly and caution should be taken not to splash water into eyes or hands when using a solution of warm water and baking soda with a battery brush or terminal cleaner. Confirm if its tray is in good condition as well as tighten hold-down clamp bolts of this battery. Apply zinc-based primer followed by painting of any corroded metal parts. A discharged battery can be recharged slowly at one or two amperes pace or maintained with a slow rate charger. When connected to cables ,fast charging may cause harm to electric system Do this by removing all cell covers putting clean clothes on them then connecting clamps from battery charger cable to posts of batteries If you are using a charger that has more than two amps, ensure that it does not exceed two amps otherwise use manufacturer's guide instructions on how much amperage you can use to charge your particular type of battery Check regularly to avoid over heating during charging process To know when this happens, remove cell caps in batteries whose specific gravity are removable by a hydrometer every hour during the last few hours of charging Stop charging if the specific gravity remains constant for two hours while gas is freely produced in the electrolyte Some batteries with sealed tops have built-in hydrometers that indicate the state of charge by color If its top is sealed but there is no built-in hydrometer, you can use a digital voltmeter to check if it has been receiving some charge At this level, it should be 12.5 volts or above.
