The air filter box assembly serves as a flame arrester in the event of an engine backfire and must always be installed during vehicle operation. It is designed to keep airborne dirt and dust from entering the engine, making proper maintenance essential; a clogged element can lead to an enriched fuel mixture, restricted airflow and power, and increased oil contamination with abrasives. All models feature a disposable paper cartridge air filter box element that should be checked at each tune-up, or more frequently in dusty conditions. Loose dust can be removed by striking the filter against a hard surface or using compressed air, and the filter should be replaced every 30,000 miles or every 24 months. To remove the filter, unscrew the wing nut(s), lift off the housing cover, and take out the filter element, ensuring to release any thumb latches. Before installing a new or original filter, clean the inside of the housing, then place the paper air filter box filter, seat the top cover, and tighten the wing nut(s), securing any thumb latches if present. All models use a flat cartridge type air filter box element, and during installation, ensure that the word UP is facing upward.
