Depress the brake pedal several times with the engine off and start it. If the pedal goes down slightly, operation is normal. Depress the pedal while the engine is running, then stop the engine with the pedal depressed. If there's no change in the pedal reserve travel, the booster is airtight. Disconnect the cable(s) from the negative battery terminal(s), remove the brake master cylinder, remove the vacuum hose(s) from the brake booster, remove the lock pin and clevis pin, remove the booster mounting fasteners, angle the booster up from the firewall and remove it. Replace the gasket, set the pushrod length, apply 20 in-Hg of vacuum, measure the distance, adjust the pushrod length, tighten the mounting nuts, install the clevis to the brake pedal, apply grease, adjust the brake pedal height, bleed the brake system and test the brakes.

To inspect disc brakes, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the vehicle securely on jackstands. Remove the wheels to access the two pads in each caliper. Check the pad thickness by looking at each end of the caliper and through the inspection window in the caliper body. If the lining material is less than the thickness, replace the pads. If it is difficult to determine the exact thickness, remove the pads for further inspection. Clean the pads with brake cleaner and re-measure them with a ruler or vernier caliper. Measure the disc thickness with a micrometer to ensure it still has service life remaining. If any disc is thinner than the specified minimum thickness, replace it.
