Q:
How do you access, inspect, and replace Pressure Plate and Clutch Disc during an engine or transaxle removal on Nissan Versa? Posted by Customer
A:
Access to the clutch components is typically achieved by removing the transaxle, and if the engine is being taken out for a major overhaul, it is advisable to check the clutch for wear and replace any worn components. Given the relatively low cost of clutch components compared to the time and labor required for access, it is prudent to replace them whenever the engine or transaxle is removed, unless they are new or in excellent condition, including the clutch concentric release cylinder/bearing. To support the clutch disc during removal, a clutch alignment tool should be installed through the clutch disc hub, centering the disc in the pressure plate before tightening the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts. Inspect the flywheel and pressure plate for indexing marks, and if they are not present, create your own scribe marks to ensure proper alignment during reinstallation. Loosen the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts gradually in a criss-cross pattern until all spring pressure is relieved, then securely hold the pressure plate while removing the bolts and sliding it over the alignment tool, followed by the clutch disc. During inspection, check the flywheel for cracks and other damage, and if minor imperfections are found, a machine shop can resurface it. The lining on the clutch disc should have at least 1/16-inch above the rivet heads, and any signs of excessive wear or damage should prompt a replacement. The release cylinder/bearing should also be replaced alongside the clutch disc. Inspect the pressure plate's machined surface and diaphragm spring fingers, replacing it if any damage is noted. Clean the machined surfaces of the flywheel and pressure plate thoroughly, ensuring no oil or grease is present, and handle these parts with clean hands. Position the clutch disc and pressure plate with the alignment tool, ensuring proper installation orientation. Tighten the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts finger tight in a criss-cross pattern, then center the clutch disc by ensuring the alignment tool is properly seated. Tighten the bolts gradually in a criss-cross pattern to prevent distortion, and after snugging all bolts, tighten them to the specified torque. Finally, remove the alignment tool and install the transaxle along with all previously removed components, ensuring all fasteners are tightened to the correct torque specifications.
