The position of the air filter in the four-cylinder models is at the center of a housing, inside the engine while on V6 models it is in a housing located on the left hand side of the engine. For removal of the air filter on a four-cylinder model, one has to unscrewthe two wing nuts and remove the top of that housing so as to take out its filter element. 3.3L V6 models need one to release these spring clips that keep together those two halves of an air cleaner housing and then lift up its cover so as to take away its air filter element. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, disconnect the electrical connector from the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor and intake air temperature sensor. Loosen the retaining clamp securing the MAF sensor to the air intake duct or resonator. Detach the spring clips and remove the air filter upper housing and mass airflow sensor as an assembly. Remove the lower air filter housing mounting bolts and remove it from the engine compartment. Remember, installation is the reverse of removal.

If the outer surface of the filter is dirty, it should be replaced. If it is only moderately dusty, it can be cleaned with compressed air from the back to the front.
