Visually inspect the camshaft bearing surfaces for damage, measure the outside diameter of each camshaft bearing journal, and compare it to the specified limits.

Inspect each lifter for scuffing, measure their diameters, and determine oil clearance. Lubricate the lifters with clean engine oil and place them back in their original locations.

Subtract the outside diameter of each lifter from the inside diameter of the lifter bore and compare the difference to the clearance specified in this Chapter. If both the lifter and the bore are within acceptable limits, this measurement should fall within tolerance. However, if new parts such as lifters or the lifter guide assembly (SOHC) or the cylinder head (DOHC) have been changed, this clearance may no longer fall within the specified limit.

Loosen the camshaft bearing caps in two or three steps, following the reverse order of the tightening sequence, while keeping the caps in order for reinstallation.

Install the camshaft oil seal, ensuring the remainder of the cylinder head assembly follows the reverse of the disassembly process.
