On top of the automatic transaxle mounts the transmission range switch. Firstly, remove the nut and then get the manual lever out of its position in relation to range switch assembly. Afterwards, take off the electrical connector from the switch. Finally, take away also the mounting bolts and then remove the range switch itself. The reverse of removal is an installation process. Put the range switch in its original position. Make sure that engine will start only in Park or neutral Verify that back-up light will come on only when reversing vehicle Adjust range switch as necessary to ensure these conditions are met For adjustment purposes, set parking brake Loosen nut on end of shift cable Ensure shift lever inside vehicle and Manual lever on transaxle are both in park Tighten nut making sure transmission manual lever stays in park Finally check for proper operation.

The Back Up Light Switch circuit is controlled by a plunger-type switch that is screwed into the base of the transmission housing on its left-hand side on 5-speed transmissions and into the front of the transmission housing on 6-speed transmissions. If a fault develops in the circuit, first ensure that the circuit fuse has not blown. To test the switch, disconnect the wiring connector, and use a multi-meter set to the resistance function or a battery-and-bulb test circuit to check that there is continuity between the switch terminals only when reverse gear is selected. If this is not the case, and there are no obvious breaks or other damage to the wires, the switch is faulty and must be renewed. For 5-speed transmissions, firmly apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and support it securely on axle stands. Drain the transmission oil, disconnect the wiring connector from the Back Up Light Switch, unscrew the switch from the transmission, and remove it. For 6-speed transmissions, remove the air cleaner assembly, the battery and battery tray, disconnect the wiring connector from the Back Up Light Switch, unscrew the switch from the transmission, and remove it. To refit, apply suitable sealant to the switch threads, and then screw it back into the transmission housing. Tighten the switch to the specified torque, then reconnect the wiring connector and check the operation of the circuit. Where applicable lower the vehicle to the ground, and top-up/refill the transmission oil as applicable.

The neutral position switch should show continuity in neutral and all other gears while being open in Reverse between terminals 2 and 3.

Begin by removing the air inlet duct.

1. Raise the vehicle and securely support it on jackstands. 2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the switch. 3. Unscrew and remove the switch from the transaxle. 4. Apply a light coat of clean oil to a new O-ring. 5. Install the switch and tighten it securely. 6. Complete the installation by reversing the removal steps and adding transaxle fluid as necessary.

The PNP switch should be replaced by a dealer service department or a qualified automatic transmission shop.

Remove the hold-down bolt and pull the switch straight out of the transaxle.

The back-up light switch should have continuity only in Reverse.

Replace the back-up light switch.

Unplug the switch electrical connectors and check continuity as follows:With the shift lever in Park, there should be continuity between terminals 1 and 2, and between terminals 3 and 4.With the shift lever in Reverse, there should be continuity between terminals 3 and 5.With the shift lever in Neutral, there should be continuity between terminals 1 and 2, and between terminals 3 and 6.With the shift lever in Drive, there should be continuity between terminals 3 and 7.With the shift lever in 2, there should be continuity between terminals 3 and 8.With the shift lever in 1, there should be continuity between terminals 3 and 9.

Apply a light coat of clean oil to a new O-ring.
