What steps should be taken before removing the piston and connecting rod assemblies on Nissan Quest? Posted by Customer
A:
Before indeed disassembling the pistons and the connecting rods, the cylinder heads, the oil pan, and the oil pump pick-up should also be off if they are not yet off. Feel with your nail for any ridge at the top limit of ring travel about twenty-five millimeters from the head of each cylinder. In case the ridges are because of the carbon deposits or cylinder wear, then these ridges should be made to be eliminated by the use of a reamer known as ridge before you are able to un-stick piston and connecting rod assemblies if you have to for breaking of pistons. After cutting off the cylinder ridges, right side up the engine and carefully place on its top with the crankshaft standing up. Before removing the connecting rods, rotate the crankshaft and use the feeler gauges to measure the side clearance; they should have no play. If the side clearance is over the service limit, possibility is that new connecting rods will be required. Clean the connecting rods and their caps to note code numbers, if none exists, then punch a mark using a center punch. Insert your fingers under the heads of the other connect-ing rod cap nuts and turn each one out slowly so that they can be slackened and removed by hand D tentative tightening of the number one connecting rod cap and bursting of the bearing insert should not cause it to fall out. When removing the piston and it will slide on the crankshaft journal and cylinder wall, it is advisable to fit short lengths of plastic/rubber hoses on the connecting rod cap bolts. withdraw the bearing insert and simply eject the connecting rod/piston assembly through the top of a the engine. Press down on the upper bearing surface using a wooden hammer handle. In cases with resistance, confirm that all the ridge material has been cleared off the cylinder. Follow the same process for other cylinders in the x-ray through the use of the relevant cylinder label. Reconnecting the connecting rod caps and bearing inserts to their rods, tighten only the cap nuts slightly so they do not damage bearing surfaces. Do not cut the pistons off the connecting rods.
