After the cylinder ridges have been removed, turn the engine upside-down so that the crankshaft is facing up.

The connecting rods should be checked for cracks and other damage by temporarily removing the rod caps, lifting out the old bearing inserts, and inspecting the rod and cap bearing surfaces for nicks, gouges, and scratches. After inspection, the old bearings should be replaced, and the caps should be tightened finger tight. If the engine is being rebuilt due to a connecting rod knock, new or rebuilt rods should be installed.

With the notch on top of the piston facing the drivebelt end of the engine, gently insert the assembly into the number one cylinder bore and rest the bottom edge of the ring compressor on the engine block.
