To remove the drive axle, begin by disassembling the inner CV joint. Start by removing the boot clamps and sliding the boot down the shaft. Then, pry up the retaining tabs on the boot clamps. Mark the relationship between the inner joint housing and the shaft. Mount the drive axle shaft in a vise with padded jaws and tap the inner joint housing to dislodge the cover on the end of the joint. Remove the snap-ring from the end of the shaft and mark the relationship of the shaft and spider for reassembly. Use a brass punch and hammer to drive the spider assembly off the shaft. Slide the housing and boot off the axle shaft, and clean the components with solvent for inspection.

If any freeplay is noted in the steering system components, you should inspect the idler arm and tie-rod ends for looseness.
