Q:
How to remove and install a steering knuckle on Nissan Xterra? Posted by Customer
A:
Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands placed underneath the frame (or subframe) rails. Remove the wheel. If you're working on a 4WD model, remove the driveaxle. On all models, support the lower control arm with a floor jack. Raise the jack slightly. Remove the brake caliper and brake disc. Hang the caliper out of the way on a piece of wire (don't disconnect the brake hose). Remove the disc splash shield from the steering knuckle. If you're working on a Pathfinder model, detach the balljoint from the control arm. Disconnect the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle. If you're working on a Frontier or an Xterra model, disconnect the balljoints from the steering knuckle and remove the steering knuckle. If you're working on a Pathfinder model, remove the nuts and bolts and detach the steering knuckle from the strut, then remove the steering knuckle. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the balljoint, strut (Pathfinder models) and tie-rod end fasteners to the torque values. If necessary, tighten the nut a little more to align the slots in the nut with the hole in the ballstud; don't loosen the nut to allow cotter pin insertion. Also be sure to use a new cotter pin. Tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the torque values. Tighten the locking hub bolts to the torque. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to the torque.
