Datsun/Nissan began using a reduction gear starter motor in the Canadian versions 200SX model. They were also available as an option on later models. The differences between the gear reduction and conventional starter motors are: the gear reduction starter motor has a set of ratio reduction gears while the conventional starter motor does not: the brushes on the gear reduction starter motor are located. To remove and install, disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, disconnect the starter motor wiring at the starter motor, taking note of the positions for correct installation. Remove the bolts attaching the starter motor to the engine and remove the starter motor from the vehicle. Install the starter motor to the engine, tighten the attaching bolts evenly. Be careful not over torque the mounting bolts as this will crack the nose of the starter motor case assembly. Install the starter motor wiring in the correct location, connect the negative battery cable, and start the engine a few times to make sure of proper operation. The starter motor solenoid is also known as the magnetic switch assembly. To replace, remove the starter motor from the engine, place the starter motor in a vise or equivalent to hold the starter motor in place while you are working on the solenoid. Loosen the locknut and remove the connection from the starter motor going to the M terminal of the solenoid or bottom terminal of the solenoid. Remove the securing screws and remove the solenoid. Install the solenoid to the starter motor and tighten the securing screws. Install the connection and locknut at bottom terminal of the starter motor.
