Looking at the back up light switch of 2001 and models before it, lift the car using the jack and place it on stands, find the switch and unplug the electrical connector. Engage Reverse position on the transaxle and check for the circuit between terminal numbers 2 and 4 for the 98 and earlier or 1 & 3 for the 99 and Newer diagrams. In Neutral, momentarily check continuity between terminals 1 and 3 for 1998 and earlier model years or 2 and 4 for 1999 through model year 2001, but there should be no continuity in any other gear. If continuity is not as specified with the back-up light switch, replace the switch with a new one. On 2002+ models, the location of the switch electrical connector is at the front, specifically the reverse switch, with the neutral switch available at the rear of the transaxle. During inspection of Reverse switch, engage the transaxle reverse and check the circuit continuity of the terminals of the connector, while no continuity should be felt in the other gears. As for the Neutral switch, shift the transaxle to the Neutral position and conduct the continuity check. If continuity is not as specified, then it is recommended that you replace the switch. To remove the switch, first one has to drain the transaxle lubricant, then proceed to disconnect the switch electrical connector, remove the switch hold-down bolt, and the switch itself can be pulled straight out. Put only a small amount of clean oil to a new O-ring, and then insert a new switch and O-ring to their places, and then firmly them with the help of hold-down bolt. Connect the electrical connector and test the switch, pour the correct lubricant into the transaxle and then the jackstand to bring down the vehicle.

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. 2. Shift the transaxle into Neutral. 3. Unplug the switch electrical connectors. 4. Remove the switch retaining screws and take out the switch. 5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Do not tighten the retaining screws until you have adjusted the switch.

Replace the back-up light switch.
