Q:
How do you check and replace the EGR Vacuum Solenoid and EGR Valve of the EGR system on Nissan Maxima? Posted by Customer
A:
EGR system recirculates a portion of its exhaust gases into the intake manifold, which causes low combustion temperature and subsequently NOx compound reduction. The PCM controls various other components such as the EGR valve, EGR control solenoid valve, EGR temperature sensor and EGR control backpressure transducer valve in this system. The PCM utilizes information from both ported and manifold vacuum systems and EGR temperature sensor to assist in determining the timing for turning on or off the EGR. Examine hoses, connections and vacuum lines for damage or adequate attachment when checking the EGR system.Ensure that the engine reaches operating temperature and let idle; open and close throttle to see whether there is movement of stem of EGR valve which indicates good operation of control system. If there is no movement, inspect whether vacuum signal is reaching to the EGR valve otherwise check hoses and the EGR control solenoid. For further component tests, apply vacuum to see if it opens and stays open while you can clean it in case there are deposits inside an EGR valve. Also, check vacuum signal for an electronic solenoid that controls a specific motor with applied voltage by using battery terminals. When tested with vacuum test system should leak through the EPV. Lastly, contact resistance can be measured by submerging the component into water thereby observing resistance changes along with temperature.Parts replacement entails instructions of how to remove, clean or replace parts such as: The 1999 models onwards have their Exhaust Gas Recirculation Systems consisting of PCM controlled stepper motor type valves that regulate precise flow rates based on engine conditions for better performance. These components have same checks as well as replacement procedures included in this manual.

Q:
How can you check if the EGR valve is stuck or defective for the 1999 Nissan Pathfinder? Posted by Customer
A:
With the engine cold, you can push on the EGR valve diaphragm. If it doesn't move or is hard to move, it indicates a stuck or defective EGR valve.

Q:
What should you do if the diaphragm doesn't move or moves only with much effort for the 1998 Nissan Maxima? Posted by Customer
A:
If the diaphragm doesn't move, or moves only with much effort, replace the EGR valve with a new one.

Q:
How can you verify the operation of the EGR system for the 1998 Nissan Maxima? Posted by Customer
A:
To verify system operation, bring the engine to operating temperature, allow it to idle, and then open and close the throttle to check if the EGR valve stem moves, indicating proper control system function.
