Q:
How to remove and reinstall the steering wheel and airbag module on Nissan Quest? Posted by Customer
A:
To dismantle the particular airbag models the negative battery terminal should be disconnected first followed by the positive battery terminal and this should take not less than ten minutes. Correct the position of the steering wheel, and align it with the central position and pull out the rounds cover at the bottom of the steering wheel to disconnect the circuit of the air-bag module. Subsequently, disconnect the airbag harness connector and take off the side covers to find the airbag module screws that ought to be replaced with others. Pull out the clockspring from the airbag module harness and take out the airbag module off the steering wheel. Loosen and pull the steering wheel retainig nut and indicate the position of the steering wheel regarding the steering shaft before disconnecting the cruise control wire harness, if any. Next, the steering wheel should be pulled off using the steering wheel puller; be cautious not to pull the electrical leads. The clockspring may have to be pulled out, the center hub taped onto the outer ring to hold it in place. The last of the procedures associated with the removal of the clockspring will be installation and these are; Ensure the connector wire is properly connected on the clockspring before setting back the clockspring in place, Check that the front wheels are straight. Do not rotate the steering shaft and adjust the clockspring if required by rotating the hub and scribing reference line. Finally bolt the clockspring clockwise with the two mounting screws and pass the electrical leads through the steering wheel and then screw the latter anti-clockwise until the nut tightens to the required torque of 130 lbf-in (7.2 kgf-cm). Last but not least, lock the air bag module with new TORX bolts and wash down the threads with water; this is because the air bag circuits must be checked with the ignition key on to make the warning light blink and then turn off. For models without air bags, first, turn off the battery, next, remove the horn cover screw, disconnect the horn and unlock the cruise control connectors, and separate the screws that fix the steering column and the mass damper. The subsequent removal steps are almost the same as on the models equipped with airbags. To install the parts, position the steering wheel on the mark on the steering column shaft, tighten the mass damper screw and bolt, connect the wire of the horn and put back the horn pad before connecting the negative terminal of the battery.
