    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the steering wheel on Nissan Maxima? Posted by Customer
    A:
To install or remove the airbag models, one has to turn off the car first by removing the negative terminal of the battery then you remove the positive terminal and wait for ten minutes. Align the front wheels and step on the brake pedal to set the parking brake & turn the steering wheel until the front wheels are straight; Pull the small cover over the lower part of the steering wheel and unplug the air bag module connector. Then, take off the side covers and the TORX bolts behind them; discard the bolts and remember to install new ones when putting the covers back. Softly transport the airbag module with trim cover facing in the opposite direction to your body, and secure it properly. Before you take off the steering wheel you should remove the steering wheel retaining nut and note the orientation of the steering wheel to the steering shaft. Pull out the electrical connector for the cruise control wiring harness away from the harness; Should the electrical leads hinder the removal of the steering wheel apply a steering wheel puller to detach the steering wheel from the steering shaft. If required, the clock spring can be removed by pulling the electrical connector off and disconnecting the part from the steering column, the center hub is to be taped for its stay. To install it, make sure that the front wheels of the car are aimed to the vertical plane, then you have to turn this clock spring in a clockwise manner until it would be very stiff, then you turn it in a counter clockwise manner around two and a half turns for the arrowings to be lined up. Pass the electrical leads through the steering wheel and fit it, together with correct locking of the clock spring, pin guides. Bolt on the steering wheel retaining nut and tighten it, then fit in the airbag module with the new Torx bolts followed by fitting in of cruise control switch side covers and plugging in the airbag module connector and placing the lower cover back in its position. Last, to check the airbag circuit, turn the ignition key to the On or Start position, and look at the "AIR BAG" warning light turns on for about seven seconds and then, off. Non airbag models, however, the negative terminal of the battery should be removed, horn pad is removed by pulling it off the wheel, and then further steps are the same as airbag model. Before fitting the wheel, apply grease to the horn contact slip ring and the sliding part of the turn signal cancel pin, then fit and tighten the steering wheel nut at the end and connect the horn wire, fit the horn pad and rejoin the battery's negative terminal.
