Nissan Frontier Crankshaft Position Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What is the location and function of the Crankshaft Position sensor on Nissan Frontier?
A: For four-cylinder and 3.3L V6 models, the Crankshaft Position sensor is located at the rear of the engine on the transmission bellhousing. It detects gaps in the flywheel/driveplate gear teeth to determine crankshaft speed which is used by the PCM for engine misfire detection. Remove it from the transmission bellhousing and measure the resistance across its terminals to check the sensor. The resistance should be within a specified range for each engine type. If these values of resistance are not right then it should be replaced by a new one. Faulty wiring harness may be revealed if correct values have been observed in both aforementioned cases. If these are fine, but, then there is a need of diagnosing them before any repair work can be done by qualified facility in PCM. There are two Crankshaft Position sensors for 3.5L V6 models; The Crankshaft Position sensor (POS) mounted on aluminum oil pan section at rear of engine close to transmission bellhousing and The Crankshaft Position sensor (REF) located on aluminum oil pan section at front of engine below crankshaft pulley which serve as gaps detectors using permanent magnet, core and coil that vary voltage signals sent to PCM . These signals which include ignition timing, fuel synchronization and misfire detection are used by PCM . Measure and check this against specified range for REF, Crankshaft Position sensor where R denotes Resistance between terminals should be taken as reference value. If these values of resistance are not correct then it would require replacement with new one while checking also wiring harness for open circuits or damage too as an alternative option if need arises when everything seems alright with both wiring harness and properly functioning sensors being present must be considered before visiting any expert technicians at certified workshops who understand more about how PCMs operate in cars so as fix all errors indicated above (losses). For POS, disconnect electrical connector, verify presence of battery voltage in B+ wire terminal, and check continuity to ground at black wire terminal. After removing the sensor, backprobe signal wire terminal with voltmeter. Touch it with a metal object and pull away fast; this should make voltmeter go to 5.0 volts then down to zero volts again. It must be replaced if the sensor does not respond as described above. Disconnect electrical connector then remove sensor for replacement.
