The temperature gauge sending unit on SOHC engines is located adjacent to the distributor, while on DOHC engines, it is located in the water outlet tube. This is the coolant temperature sensor for the computer on some models. There is more than one temperature sensor, but only one is used for the indicator system. If an overheating indication occurs even when the engine is cold, the wiring between the dash and the sending unit should be checked for a short circuit to ground. If the gauge is inoperative, the circuit can be tested by briefly grounding the wire to the sending unit while the ignition is On, but the engine is not running for safety. If the gauge deflects full scale, the sending unit should be replaced.
