Nissan Xterra Intermediate Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the intermediate shaft on Nissan Xterra?
A: Ensure that the vehicle is parked with the wheels facing straight ahead. First, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal then from the positive battery terminal. Disable the air bag system. For this reason, you should turn the ignition key to the LOCK position in order to prevent steering shaft from turning. Otherwise, airbag clockspring will be damaged. Under the hood, mark how intermediate shaft and steering gear input shaft (Frontier and Xterra.models) (Intermediate shaft-to-steering gear pinch bolt) or transfer gear assembly (Pathfinder models) (When steering is centered, gap on intermediate shaft aligns with mark on end cap and projection on transfer gear is pinch bolt (Pathfinder models)) relate to each other. Remove coupler bolt. Therefore, mark relationship of intermediate shaft and steering column shaft then remove pinch bolt(Steering column-to-intermediate shaft pinch bolt). Slide intermediate shaft up off steering gear input shaft(Frontier and Xterra models) or transfer gear assembly(Pathfinder models), then pull shaft down off steering gear input shaft . Installation is reverse of removal. Matchmarks have to be aligned properly; moreover coupler bolts must be tightened to torque values. If there is a cutout on top of intermediate shaft, it should face pinch bolt.
