Clean the bearing caps and journals, then install the lifters in their original locations after lubricating them with clean engine oil.

Apply a bead of RTV sealant to the sealing surfaces of the No. 1 bearing cap(s) and the cylinder head. Install new O-rings on the secondary timing chain tensioner(s) and the VVT oil control orifice on the No. 1 bearing cap(s).

Camshaft runout can be checked by setting up the camshaft with a dial indicator and slowly turning it to observe readings. Compare these readings to specified runout values, and if they exceed the specified limit, the camshaft should be replaced.

To remove the lifters, start by removing the valve cover and rocker arm shaft assemblies. Secure the lifters with rubber bands to prevent them from falling out of the guides. Remove the lifter guide assembly and then remove the lifters from the bores one at a time, keeping them in order. Avoid laying the lifters on their side or upside down to prevent air from becoming trapped inside.

Install the camshaft sprocket bolts, ensuring they are correctly matched to the camshafts, and then tighten the bolts to the specified torque.

Inspect each lifter for scuffing, measure their diameters, and determine oil clearance. Lubricate the lifters with clean engine oil and place them back in their original locations.

Loosen the camshaft bearing caps in reverse order of tightening, keeping them in order for reinstallation.

Visually inspect the camshaft bearing surfaces for damage, measure the outside diameter of each camshaft bearing journal, and compare it to the specified limits.

The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal, and if any part of the valve train was replaced, check and adjust the valve clearance.

Inspect the contact and sliding surfaces of each lifter for wear and scratches. If the lifter pad is worn, it's advisable to check the corresponding camshaft lobe or adjusting shim on DOHC engines, as it will likely be worn too. Caution: On SOHC engines, do not lay the lifters on their side or upside down, as air can become trapped inside, requiring the lifter to be bled. Lifters can only be laid on their side if submerged in a pan of clean engine oil until reassembly.

For camshaft removal, take off the cylinder heads, then remove the bolts and gently pry off the camshaft cover plate at the transaxle end.
